Why are there so many shooting incidents and other gun crimes on Walmart property?

Friday, October 4, 2013

Walmart already surpasses number of shootings at their stores from last year, with three more months to go!

Last year, as I chronicled, Walmart stores had at least 54 shootings on their properties, plus at least 24 other non-shooting gun crimes.

This year they are going to blow that number out of the water.

As of yesterday, October 2, Walmart surpassed the number of shootings from last year.  The 55th and 56th shootings this year were an accidental shooting in a Connecticut Walmart by a legal conceal handgun carrier (one of at least 14 incidents by legal carriers since I started this blog, 10 of which have been this year!), and a suicide at a Montana Walmart by a man who had just purchased his shotgun there.  Wow.

As I post at the running list of Walmart shootings, so far this year, there have been 56 shootings, with 19 dead and 31 injured.

Additionally, non-shooting incidents this year have included 49 armed robberies with guns, 12 incidents of guns and ammo stolen, and one plotted mass shooting That's twice the number I found last year!

There have also been four suicides (including one murder/suicide).

There are three months more to go in 2013.  With 1-2 shootings a week, now, that means that the number of shootings is likely to be around 65 this year.  We'll see....

You would think incidents like these would get Walmart to re-think its policies on allowing conceal carry in its stores and continuing to sell guns, and maybe actually DO something to reduce gun deaths, like patrol more of their parking lots.

But profits come first, I guess, above the safety of their employees and customers.

Sign THIS petition today, to urge them to change.

Walmart, how many shootings does it take for you to change??

A woman was walking with another woman and a child when a man came up and robbed her of her purse at gunpoint, in the parking lot of a Walmart in Newington, Connecticut.

Luckily, no one was injured.  The robber was later caught by a K-9 unit at a nearby motel.

A state police K-9 team was brought in and the trail led to the Grantmoor Motor Lodge at 3000 Berlin Turnpike in Newington, where police found Luis Alicea-Rodriguez, 20.

Conceal carry permit holder accidentally shoots himself in Tennessee Walmart

Occurred October 2, 2013.
Scene of shooting at Antioch Walmart (source)

A man who had a conceal carry permit was near the check out inside an Antioch, Tennessee, Walmart store when his concealed handgun, without a holster, slipped.  He tried to catch it, but then unintentionally discharged it, hitting himself in the leg.

Luckily no one else was injured.

From an article:
A 21-year-old man accidentally shot himself in the leg at the Walmart in Antioch Wednesday.
Police, who would not identify the man, said he suffered a minor leg injury just after 4 p.m. and was later sent to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment.
The man had a valid Tennessee handgun carry permit and was carrying a .40 caliber pistol in his waistband. He felt the gun slipping as he neared a Walmart checkout line with a gallon of milk in hand. When he reached for the unholstered firearm, the gun discharged a single round into his left leg, police said.
The victim then walked to a chair and sat down while an employee took the gun.
No charges are expected to be filed in the case because no one else was hurt.
Walmart permits concealed handguns in its stores.  Conceal carry permit holders have so far been responsible for at least 14 incidents in Walmart stores.  Not once has one conceal carry holder, outside of security or law enforcement, used their weapon in a defensive manner at a Walmart store.

Shots fired during attempted robbery in California Walmart parking lot

Occurred September 28, 2013.

A man was selling rap CDs in the parking lot of a Modesto, California, Walmart.  That's when a group in a car came up, grabbed his gold necklace, and pulled him into the car. Shots were fired, but luckily no one was injured.

From an article:
Two shots were fired during the incident, which occurred shortly after noon Saturday, but no injuries were reported and shoppers were in not in danger, Lt. Brian Findlen said.
Witnesses told police a car with two men approached a group selling rap CDs in the parking lot. A member of the group, a man in his 30s, approached the car and the passenger grabbed a gold chain hanging around his neck, dragging him into the car, Findlen said.
A struggle ensued and the car stopped in an area between the Walmart and a neighboring store, allowing the CD seller to break free and get away, according to police. One of the would-be robbers fired into the air, then both fled by car.
