As two Walmart employees at a store in Phoenix, Arizona, were moving money into a cash register, a man robbed them. When a store manager, 47-year-old Peter Marquez, tried to stop the robber just outside the doors, the robber shot him and killed him. The shooter escaped.

The incident began inside the store when the suspect confronted two employees who were exchanging money into cash registers from a shopping cart, Thompson said.
The suspect held the employees at gunpoint, grabbed the shopping cart and pushed it out the door.
As the suspect exited the building, Marquez and another employee, who were both outside, started running toward the door. The suspect raised his gun and shot Marquez, Thompson said.
He then briefly paused to take some of the money out of the shopping cart and fled eastbound, crossed 75th Avenue and jumped a fence into a residential area, Thompson said.

"He was a good person," said stocker Martin Cruz, who added a candle to a memorial that was set up near the glass doors at the 24-hour Phoenix store where Marquez was killed. "He was strict at what he did. He liked his job a lot."
"He was a good, loving person," said an employee who would only identify herself as Angela. "He always had a smile on his face, and he was always here before his shift started."
